Bangladesh-Cambodia agree to sign a free trade agreement

Bangladesh and Cambodia have agreed to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to expand the area of ​​trade cooperation. It will be signed as the prime ministers of both countries have agreed on it. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed on a free trade agreement in a bilateral meeting on Thursday evening (September 22).

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said these things in a press conference. The meeting took place in the Bilateral Meeting Room at the Prime Minister’s residence in New York. The foreign minister said that when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her interest in the free trade agreement with Cambodia, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to the proposal.

During this meeting, various issues of bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Cambodia were discussed. Cambodia’s prime minister at the time expressed his interest in signing an agreement on the export of rice from his country to Bangladesh. He invited Bangladesh to invest in the agricultural and health infrastructure development sectors in Cambodia.

Hun Sen assured the Prime Minister of Bangladesh that Cambodia, as ASEAN president, will do everything in its power to resolve the Rohingya crisis. Apart from this, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can help the migrant-sending countries by issuing effective recommendations to meet the challenges at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These countries are facing various problems due to the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister said this during a bilateral meeting with IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino in the ‘Bilateral Meeting Room’ at his residence in New York.

The Prime Minister thanked the IOM for its assistance in repatriating victims from Bangladesh who was trafficked to several countries, including Libya and the European Union. The Director-General of IOM appreciated the various steps Bangladesh has taken for the well-being of migrants and expressed the hope that the area of ​​cooperation between Bangladesh and IOM will expand further in the future.

Later, the prime minister held another bilateral meeting with Kosovar President Vijosa Osmani-Sadriu. Several issues of bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Kosovo were discussed during the meeting. Apart from this, the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the same place.
