International Anti-Poverty Day and China’s success in poverty alleviation

October 20: October 17 was the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Over the past ten years, China has actively participated in international poverty reduction, committing itself to its own poverty reduction. China’s role in reducing international poverty has been significant. Working hand in hand with other countries, China is trying to build a community of common interests without poverty.

Xianglong village is located on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, Laos. Due to the natural conditions and poor infrastructure, the local population has long lived in poverty. Sima Inthaong, 81, has lived here all her life. Recalling the earlier state of the village, he said:

“Before, the roof of the house was covered with weeds cut from the hills. The floor was made of wood and the walls were made of bamboo slats. It was not easy to find wood to build the house. electricity and oil lamps were made of a kind of pot and cotton wool. We bathed in the river near the village and the water was drunk. There was no drinking water.

Since 2017, Xianglong Village has become a demonstration village of the “Demonstration Cooperation Technical Assistance Project for Poverty Alleviation in East Asia” jointly implemented by China, Laos and other countries. The village has undergone many transformations in recent years. Brother Seema says:

“(Now) the assembly halls in the village are big and beautiful, all built with the help of the Chinese. The village is bigger and better, and there are schools. There are street lights. You don’t have to need to go to the river to bathe. Now you can get water at home.

At the end of 2021, the China-Laos Railway officially opened, and Luang Prabang Railway Station is located next to the village. Inspired by China’s experience in poverty alleviation, many tourist hotels and homestays are built in Xianglong Village. Seeing the change in the village, old Sima said:

“I was poor, but now I’m fine. I’m very happy, very happy. I’m very happy.”

In Papua New Guinea, an island country in the South Pacific, a technology imported from China has become famous: it can green the soil, prevent soil erosion and is useful for growing mushrooms. This is Junkao in China. Junkao technology was invented by Lin Zhanxi, a Chinese scientist and delegate to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Today, Junkao technology has spread to more than 100 countries around the world.

Freda Karolama, a mushroom grower from the Eastern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea, told reporters that he has been growing mushrooms using Junkao technology since 2020. As of July this year, his total income was 72 000 kina, or about 141,700 yuan. It made a huge difference in his life, he says:

“I have really gained a lot since I started growing mushrooms. My children can go to school and pay their school fees. I even bought a car and built a house.”

In the African country of Tanzania, the Chinese International Center for Poverty Alleviation, the first village-level demonstration project in Africa in cooperation with the Tanzanian government, the Education Center for Poverty Alleviation at the China-Tanzania village was established at the rural base. By planting good seeds brought in by Chinese experts and intercropping maize, and practicing soybean cultivation techniques, B Shenga, a villager from Payapia village in Morogoro province, not only enjoyed bumper harvests, but also mastered many techniques and experiments.

He said:

“We learned four or five things from the Chinese experts. The first is to work hard, the second is to ensure good field management, the third is to use good seeds and the fourth is to weed frequently.

Over the past ten years, China has not only eliminated its own absolute poverty, but also actively participated in international poverty alleviation cooperation and shared its poverty alleviation experience with the world. He has contributed enormously to solving global development problems and to implementing the United Nations “Agenda 2030” for sustainable development. UN Secretary General Guterres said:

“China works with developing countries such as African countries, creates win-win cooperation and supports the development of other countries by adopting the policy of common development and making great contributions to poverty reduction in the world”. (Wang Haiman/Alim/Ash)
