Technology prevents lightning

100 “Early Streamer Emission Air Terminals” (ESAT) have been installed in part of the Rohingya camp in Ukhia. There was good news from there. Over the past two years, several lightning strikes have been prevented by modern surge arresters. The local government’s engineering department took the initiative to install these devices with funding from the World Bank.

Recently, the Department of Disaster Management set up ESATs on an experimental basis in 21 stormy districts in the north of the country, the Yamuna basin and the Howr region. 80 of these devices are equipped with IoT (Internet of Things) or internet to receive lightning information. 170 without IoT installation. Observations have shown that IoT-enabled devices are able to prevent lightning strikes. It has several other benefits.

Records from the ESAT device installed at Biswambharpur in Sunamganj show that the device prevented a lightning strike which occurred there on October 9 this year. On the other hand, the ESAT located in the eastern part of Netrakona prevented another lightning strike on September 5. One device is capable of protecting an area of 87 to 100 meters or 300 feet in a lightning protection system. So far, on a trial basis, lightning protection has been installed in some upazilas in Pabna, Kishoreganj, Bogra, Sunamganj, Sirajganj, Chapainawabganj, Dinajpur, Netrakona, Tangail, Gaibandha, Brahmanbaria, Dhaka, Shariatpur, Feni, Kurigram , Rajshahi, Jamalpur, Habiganj, Naogaon, Bogra and Lalmanirhat. The device is installed.

As part of the “Emergency Multi Sector Rohingya Crisis” project, 100 devices were installed in the Rohingya camp in Ukhia. The director of this project, Javed Karim, told Jugantar that many countries around the world have already successfully used this technology. Among the countries are France and Sweden. We only installed 100 devices in the Rohingya camp in Ukhia. 600 additional devices are to be installed there. Each of these thunder protection systems is associated with a manual counter. When lightning strikes, the device intercepts it and counts the number of times the lightning has been intercepted. We have a video of it. Today’s devices are more modern with IoT systems. Thanks to this technology, the functionality of the device can be maintained at home via the Internet.

Director General of the Directorate of Disaster Management. Atiqul Haque told Jugantar that 284 people have died from lightning in the last 6 months across the country. 276 of them are farmers. People must be protected from immortality. We have deployed ESAT technology in some locations on a trial basis. The World Bank and the LGED set up Rohingya camps. Several of our organizations have also deployed the system. This technology is used for the security of heavy civil aviation equipment in airports. We set them up experimentally on the advice of the Department of Meteorology, University of Dhaka. The ESAT installation with IoT has been tested to prevent lightning. No casualties were reported in these areas. But if there are victims within certain limits, we will think about it again.

The Department of Meteorology at the University of Dhaka has been given the responsibility of using modern lightning protection technology in the field. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has taken this initiative. Chairman of Department of Meteorology, University of Dhaka Dr. Tauhida Rashid told Jugantar, “Our feasibility study focused on what measures can be taken to reduce fatalities from lightning strikes. There we focus on lightning forecast system, awareness. Another of them was technology-based solutions. The conventional copper system has some disadvantages. The device will not work if the copper is stolen or lost. For lack of follow-up, it is often not understood. The IoT-based lightning arrester ESeat system is quite modern. Many countries around the world use it. It quickly transmits lightning and goes underground. Monitoring is very important in these areas. In this technology, the status and performance of the device can be easily monitored through the Internet.

A company named Iconic Engineering Limited provides technical support to ESAT technology devices installed in different parts of the country. Sheikh Hasina Akhter, business leader of this organization, said that through the installation of continuous online monitoring of IoT technology, the sustainable development of noise prevention management and the simultaneous use of technology are insured. In this case, compatriots will get lasting benefits from the investment.
