Despite various global crises, the reactor pressure vessel or nuclear reactor, the main device of the second unit of the country’s first nuclear power plant under construction at Ruppur in Ishwardi, has been installed according to schedule. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated the installation of this pressure vessel via video conference. The Prime Minister gave permission to install the pressure vessel at 10:34 a.m. on Wednesday. Previously, the Prime Minister was connected via video conference from Gana Bhavan.
Thanks to this, the Rooppur power station is a new step in the list of peaceful users of nuclear energy. Currently, a total of 33 countries in the world produce nuclear energy. Bangladesh will go into the production of the first unit of the power plant by the end of next year. However, when the electricity will go to the national grid will depend on when the Power Development Board (PDB) installs the transmission line.

This reactor is called the core of a nuclear power plant.
The Rooppur project is progressing under the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA), the international organization that regulates nuclear projects, and under the organization’s strict supervision. In 1961, an initiative was taken to set up a nuclear power station at Rooppur in Pabna. But this initiative did not go far. After independence, Nation Father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative to build a 200 MW capacity nuclear power plant at Rooppur. During his visit to the Soviet Union (Russia) in 1972, Bangabandhu asked the country’s President Nupur to cooperate in the construction of a nuclear power plant.
After the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, this process stopped. After a long time, after the Awami League came to power in 1996, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. MA Wazed Mia took the initiative to build the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. Although the process continued after that, after the change of government in 2001, the process again stumbled. After the Awami League came to power in 2009, the process of establishing the Rooppur nuclear power plant resumed. Bangladesh has reached an agreement with Russia on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Bangladesh signed an agreement with Russia in this regard in 2021. Then the process goes further.
The Rooppur project is the largest and costliest project in the country in the last 50 years since independence. Russia has lent 90% of this project which costs more than 1 lakh 13,000 rupees. At the same time, the nuclear power plant is being built by the Russian contractor Atomstroyexport under several international agreements.
