What you need to know before buying a router

The frequency band of the router

A router’s frequency band is the path the router uses for network traffic.

Single-band routers use the 2.4 GHz frequency. Although it has a lot of network traffic, it is able to provide Wi-Fi to devices far away. However, it slows down the internet speed significantly.

On the other hand, dual band routers use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. Experts recommend using the 5 GHz frequency for fast internet.

WiFi standard

Antenna range

By placing the WiFi router in the middle of the room, the network is available everywhere. However, it is often seen that the device cannot access the entire network due to various obstacles. In short, there is no substitute for routers with larger antennas when it comes to extending the network throughout the house.

There is no way to directly measure the range of a router. In this case, it is therefore wise to look at the dBI rating of the router’s antenna before purchasing it. For small homes, a 2-4 dBi router is sufficient. However, for relatively large houses or offices, where obstacles (walls, ceilings, furniture) are high, a router with a higher DBI rating should be chosen.

This information is usually found in the router’s specifications.

MU-MIMO technology

The more devices your Wi-Fi network connects, the slower it gets. This is because single-user routers (SU-MIMO) can typically only connect to one device at a time. On the other hand, MU-MIMO routers are capable of connecting multiple devices to a Wi-Fi network at the same time. And it does not affect the speed of the internet.

Therefore, when choosing a router, it is recommended by technicians to check whether it has MU-MIMO technology. Note that this technology is only available in new generation routers. For example 802.11ac or WiFi-5 and 802.11ax or WiFi-6.


It is very useful to check whether the router has the correct and enough ports for advanced work or connecting another device.

A good router is characterized by sufficient Ethernet ports. The generation of the USB port should also be considered.
